It all started in the late 1940’s
Nashville Billiard & Patio has been owned and operated by the Gilchrist Family since 1953. Ray Gilchrist got his start in the billiard business back in the late 40’s at the Saunier Wilhelm plant in Alabama, where he learned all about pool tables.
In the early 50’s, he moved to Nashville and took a full-time day job, while spending nights and weekends on the road recovering used pool tables from small-town pool rooms. That’s when “Ray’s Billiard Supply” was born.
A few years later, he opened a pool room in West Nashville and also sold pool tables there. The Gandy pool table was his brand, and he was the first dealer they ever had. Over the next thirty years, he moved his showroom to several locations around Nashville. In 1980, he bought the Steepleton store at 927 8th Avenue South.
Then Ray retired
In the early 90’s, Ray retired and three of his sons took over day-to-day operations. Their first decision was to rename the business to what it should have been all along: Nashville Billiard Company.
All of Ray’s sons knew about and loved pool tables long before getting a paycheck. As kids, they helped their dad pull staples and sweep floors on weekends, naturally becoming more involved as they grew. Ronnie started full-time around 1982, Glenn two years later, and Cliff in 1991.
The 8th Avenue store expanded
Over the years, the 8th Avenue store has expanded multiple times. With the addition of bar stools in the late 80’s and home theater seating in 2010, we have truly come full circle in home entertainment. Antique pool tables have always been a particular passion of ours. In 2017, the showroom expanded further, and many visitors enjoy browsing just for the experience.
